After the 2012 bestseller Where’d You Go, Bernadette spent a year on the New York Times bestseller list, it became a hot property in Hollywood. Last year, Richard Linklater was announced as the director, and the project recruited a heavyweight cast—Cate Blanchett in the title role as a woman who disappears before a planned family trip to Antarctica, Billy Crudup as her husband, and Kristin Wiig, Laurence Fishburne, and Judy Greer supporting.

The movie’s release has been delayed from an original summer 2018 date to a planned premiere in March 2019, but there’s reason for the book’s many fans to believe that the film version is finally on its way: Namely, today’s trailer showing the quirky, charming mystery through the eyes of teenage newcomer Emma Nelson, as she tries to figure out exactly where her mother went.

Given the film’s March release date and Linklater’s deep ties to Austin and SXSW, it’s probably a safe bet to expect it to premiere a few weeks before it hits theaters at the event’s film festival. If so, it’ll follow in the tradition of 2016’s Everybody Wants Some!!, which also premiered at SXSW, as well as the filmmaker’s Boyhood, Before Midnight, and Bernie, all of which played at the festival before wide release.

Regardless of where it premieres, Where’d You Go, Bernadette will likely continue a streak of well-received films from the director, whose movies over the past decade have been among the most critically acclaimed of his career. It’ll also mark the first project with a majority female cast in Linklater’s storied, twenty-film career—and with Blanchett in the lead, a script co-written by the Me and Orson Welles team of Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo, Jr., and a promising debut from Nelson, there’s a lot of reason to be optimistic that it’ll be a good one.
